The Rural Voice, 1986-04, Page 49ed, since they are more susceptible
to compaction. The yield reduction
associated with spring discing ver-
sus fall plowing on clay loam is 5
per cent.
The chisel plows, or disc -chisel
plows, can also be considered in
the spring. The disc -chisel system
would be more of an advantage
since the discs chop the previous
year's crop residue. Special atten-
tion must be made with regards to
the choice of teeth. The twisted
shovel may incorporate more
residue than the sweep, yet in wet-
ter weather the sweep will continue
to shatter soil across the full width
of the machine, where the twisted
shovel may not. Drawbacks
associated with these units are hav-
ing the capability to handle the in-
creased residue at time of planting
and resisting the urge to drop it
down below the 4" (10 cm.) depth.
A yield reduction of 3-4 per cent
may be experienced when compar-
ing spring chisel to fall plow on
loamy soils.
No -Till can also be an alter-
native. Excellent results have been
obtained on the lighter soil and to
some extent on heavier soils. If
considering No -Till, you should
use fields which have very good
drainage, are of moderate to high
fertility and avoid fields which
have any weed or disease pro-
blems. The No -Till system has
worked for many, but remember,
it requires a substantial change in
your current management system.
I would encourage the trial of this
system, but only on a small plot
basis — as with any new system.
Regardless of which system you
try, patience will be a key factor
this spring. Resist the temptation
to slap on the duals and get in the
fields early. By waiting till the pro-
per time, excellent seedbeds can be
prepared with a minimum of work,
while avoiding cloddy seedbeds
and the yield limiting effects of
compaction. ❑

REFUEL SAFELY
Many farmers are seriously burned
as a result of refueling equipment
in an unsafe manner. Never refuel
a machine without giving it time to
cool off. No smoking while refuel-
ing! Never overfill a fuel tank.
Follow these simple rules to avoid
serious injury to yourself or your
employees.
