"Testing
before investing"
About 30 of southwestern On-
tario's best farmers from Huron,
Perth, Oxford, Essex, and Kent
Counties recently took part in a
unique Top Farmers Workshop.
Working from the Purdue Crop
Budget B-10 computer program
developed in Indiana, farmers had
the opportunity to consider crop
rotations, solutions to the pro-
blem of time, farm size, and tillage
practices on their own farms.
The workshop in London was
the final of a three-day program
held over several weeks in
southwestern Ontario. It is the
direct result of the efforts of three
members of the Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture and Food who
specialize in crop production in
Huron and Perth Counties. John
Heard, Brian Hall and Ken
McEwan visited Purdue University
in 1985 and examined the program
to see if it would be beneficial to
the farmers they work with.
With the program farmers ask
themselves several questions about
their operations. For example
when considering a machinery
change questions would include:
"Where should 1 invest my next
$10,000, $25,000 or $50,000 in
machinery? How is profit affected
by a different sized combine, trac-
tor, planter? What would the next
larger size really cost me? Would a
shift to a different tillage system
likely increase or decrease net
return? How many acres of beans
are necessary to justify adding a se-
cond planter for narrow row
beans? Suppose I am short of land
preparation capacity; what is the
effect of hiring custom fertilizer
applications or hiring custom herb-
icide applications?
Each farmer titled out a Purdue
Crop Budget B-10 input form
describing thoroughly their own
farming operation. The form was
analyzed with the computer pro-
gram in Indiana, and returned to
the farmer showing options to his
current farming practices. The
course itself cost participants $100
and was meant for only farmers
serious about examining all aspects
of their cropping operation. The
program gives farmers an oppor-
tunity to farm on the computer
and "test before they
invest."OPC
