age. According to Pogue, they
must meet several criteria: weight
at least 400 pounds, possess two
normal testicles, have no horns, be
reasonably healthy and be from
herds listed as brucellosis -free.
Producers must also supply an ex-
act birthdate, and pedigree infor-
mation.
Bulls that are accepted undergo
a one-month adjustment period to
become accustomed to the rations
and the surroundings. After that
they officially start the 140 -day
test. Producers are charged 50
cents per pound gained and a yard-
age fee of 25 cents per day from
the time the calf is delivered until
the designated pick-up date.
Bulls are weighed each month
during the test and an interim
report of their weights is sent to the
producer. At the completion of the
test, the bulls are weighed and
measured for scrotal cir-
cumference and hook height, and
are ultrasonically scanned for
backfat thickness. Bulls are index-
ed according to their average daily
gain relative to the other bulls in
the group. The producer receives a
report, which includes all perfor-
mance data, along with pedigree
information.
Several producers on the tour,
;ncluding tour organizer, Don
Shaver, had bulls on test at the
Harriston station. They received
heir interim reports plus had the
opportunity to see the progress of
their bulls first-hand. They were
pleased. C PC
A day in the life of...
A select group of senior high
school students (4-H members)
were invited to participate in a
"day in the life of a college stu-
dent," hosted by Centralia College
of Agricultural Technology.
The students, chosen by their
Rural Organization Specialist had
the opportunity to mix with college
students at lunch time, and during
the day attend mock "lectures."
Teachers acquainted the potential
students with laboratories and
classrooms; they toured the
residences, met the staff and par-
ticipated in lectures which will
make them more comfortable in
the college if or when they choose
to become bona fide students
themselves, explained Kathy Bion-
di, Head of Communications and
Continuing Education at the col-
