Feed hedgers might con- sider purchasing inexpensive CALL OPTIONS on corn so that if grain prices fall dramatically, the livestock feeder will stand to benefit. JUST A WORD ABOUT ... SOME IDEAS ON GRAIN MARKETiNG ... 1 think pro- ducers this year will have to market their grain with two thoughts in mind! i) to get the best price available in a year that does not have a very bright outlook on prices, ii) to maintain a potential for im- proved revenues if indeed prices do improve. Those who sit on their hands with an "it's always darkest before the dawn" attitude may be in for a rude awakening. Remember your different marketing alternatives: i) Sell cash ii) Forward Contract iii) Basis Contract iv) Futures hedge v) Options hedge, One hedge strategy would be to incorporate a basis and/or a futures hedge with an option, to establish a minimum selling price, while still leaving the potential for gains if the market turns upward. Specifically a producer might think about selling December futures (currently around 2.11) and pur- chasing December 2.10 CALL OP- TIONS (currently around 12 cents). A basis might be locked in if/when basis levels become more competitive. This position would establish a minimum selling price, while leaving the door open to gains if the market were to move significantly higher.
