FARM NEWS
Rates included
in 1986 Guide
Farmers will find that they have
won a small victory (for this year
anyway) when they pick up their
1986 version of the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and
Food's (OMAF's) Publication 75,
Guide to Chemical Weed Control.
It includes the rates of application
for pesticides again this year. It
was rumoured that, in order to
protect itself from possible court
action in case of a dispute, the
government might exclude the
recommended rates in the 1986
publication. OMAF heard the
message that "this book without
the rates would be like a castrated
bull."
The battle to keep the rates
doesn't end here. Farmers will be
urged to present resolutions to the
provincial government through
their local soil and crop improve-
ment association it they want the
rates in the 1987 book.
In Publication 75, farmers will
be quick to notice that Lasso is in-
cluded. At the time of printing it
was not clear if Lasso would be
registered for 1986 or not. "It
would be a far greater mistake not
to include Lasso if it was registered
than to include it if it was not
registered," says Huron -Perth Soil
and Crops Specialist John Heard.
Lasso is not registered at this
point, and Heard emphasizes that
just because Lasso is in the book
doesn't mean a farmer can use it
without fear of repercussion.
The inside cover of the book
clearly tells farmers to check at
their local OMAF office to get up-
dated information on the
regulatory status of Fusilade,
Lasso, and Rival which all had on-
ly temporary registration when the
information went to press
(November 8).
According to Heard, the biggest
and best change in the publication
is that it is more efficient and
easier to read because it includes
an 18 -page section entitled "Notes
on Chemicals" which provides an
abbreviated label summary of each
chemical at the front of the book.
The farmer doesn't have to read
through the total information
about each chemical every time it is
mentioned, as was previously the
case. The change has reduced the
