Huron Soil and Crop Appreciation Night
The Huron Soil and Crop Improvement Association invented Booster
Awards which are presented to people advancing conservation efforts. Win-
ners are not necessarily farmers. Jim Ross, the association's president (from
left) presents the Booster Awards to Pat Lynch who has contributed in-
tellectual expertise to conservation projects; Bruce Shillinglaw, a
Londesboro area farmer who is an example of conservation -minded farm-
ing; Neil McGavin who has helped in the equipment needs of soil conserva-
tionists; Tom Ingles of Bruce Tile which also plays a role in conservation
projects; Joe Gibson, a member of the Ausable Bayfield Conservation
Authority Board; and Norm Alexander, one of the first and most promi-
nent of modern conservation -enthusiasts in the area. (Photos by Phyllis
Coulter.)
Huron County is a leader in
farmer -oriented soil conservation
efforts. The interest in this issue
was plainly obvious as organizers
of the second annual Appreciation
Night for soil and NA ater conserva-
Walter Mcllwain presents the
Huron County Soil and Crop Im-
provement Association's Project
Award to Bev Hill of Hill and Hill
Farms. As Hill accepts the award
he says that the farm's employee,
Bill Chipchase, deserves the credit
because he set up the test plots and
conducted the trials.
tionists scrambled to seat at least
25 more people than expected. One
of those people was the provincial
Minister of Agriculture and Food
Jack Riddell. Although he wasn't
formally on the program, Riddell
was given the opportunity to
speak. He said, with a sense of
urgency, that eight more chemicals
have been found in the ground
water in Ontario. Also, he offered
little hope for farmers who wanted
Lasso (the most recent chemical to
be prohibited for farm use) re -
licensed.
Appreciation Night, organized
by the Huron Soil and Crop Im-
provement Association, honours
those using conservation practices
and creates an incentive for those
contemplating such action.
The most prestigious of the
awards is the Norman Alexander
Conservation Award presented to
a farmer who makes exceptional
contributions to conservation in
his own farming operation. This
year, of five nominees, Gordon
Lobb of Clinton, who has had
several no -till crops in combina-
tion with other conservation prac-
tices, is the winner. Runnersup are
