Producers vote against
national agency
The Essex local of the National
Farmers' Union (NFU) put forth a
resolution asking for the creation
of a national grain marketing
board. In December, at the On-
tario Soya -Bean Growers'
Marketing Board's annual meeting
in Chatham, producers voted 60
per cent in favour of the resolu-
tion.
But at the District Eight meeting
in Brodhagen ,with producers from
Huron, Perth, Bruce, Grey, Well-
ington, Waterloo, Dufferin ) and
Oxford Counties, producers voted
33 against a national grain
marketing board, and only one in
favour.
When Dennis Dow from the
Mitchell area heard the proposal
for a national grain marketing
board, he stood up and said. "I
would oppose that." He conceded
that the present marketing system
"is not perfect" but, he contends
that it is still better than a national
marketing agency would be.
Another producer wanted to
know how the proposed board
would fit in with the mood for
freer trade today. "It is politically
inconsistent right now," said
Maurice Waddick, chairman of the
Ontario Soya -Bean Growers'
Marketing Board.
Another producer asked if such
a Targe board could market each
grain and oil seed product as ag-
gressively as the individual
marketing boards do now.
Several other producers
wondered aloud how a national
board would equally promote
canola which is primarily grown in
the western provinces, and soy-
beans, a big crop in Ontario, when
they have competing markets.
The soybean board executive
presented the NFU resolution at
eleven district soybean meetings
across the province (from
December 10 to January 24) seek-
ing input.
Response to date, three-quarters
of the way through the provincial
circuit, has varied but at this point
more producers at the county
meetings were against the resolu-
tion than in favour. ❑ PC
