The Rural Voice, 1986-02, Page 23FARM NEWS Meat Month February is the second annual Canadian Meat Month. It is held to emphasize the positive contribu- tion red meats make to a balanced diet. The event is sponsored by the Canadian Meat Council, Beef In- formation Centre. (BIC), Canadian Pork Council, Canada Sheep Council, and Agriculture Canada. The message of Meat Month will be taken across the country by a seven -page editorial and advertis- ing section in the February issue of Readers' Digest. But the real success of Meat Month is the cumulative effort of smaller projects all across the country. Everyone involved in any aspect of the red meat industry is asked to participate. Groups can encourage the use of BIC's educa- tional kits in their local schools. Last year, some livestock groups sponsored essay contests for elementary school students about the importance of the beef industry in their area. Cattlemen's Associa- tions are encouraged to contact local radio and television stations to have a say on morning talk shows. This past November, represen- tatives of the Canadian Cattlemen's Association, BIC, the Canadian Meat Council, and the Retail Council, met in Toronto to discuss the formation of a beef in- dustry task force. The role of the task force is three -pronged: • to improve communications among the various segments of the industry • to determine ways to meet the challenges facing the industry and to suggest solutions which will be acted upon by the various member - organizations or companies • to establish a network and to share information, research, etc. The first meeting of the actual task force will coincide with the Canadian Meat Council annual meeting February 6 and 7 at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. The 66th annual conference has two full days of speakers planned.
