Conservation tillage
The benefits of conservation tillage
become available to small-scale farm-
ing operations with the introduction
of the John Deere 710 Mulch Tiller.
The 710 can be operated with tractors
of 60 to 120 hp., in contrast to
previous conservation -tillage equip-
ment that requires substantially larger
tractors.
Like the John Deere 712 Mulch
Tiller introduced some years ago, the
710 consists of a row of disk or
coulter blades followed by chisel plow
shanks. It may be equipped with
20 -inch spherical disk blades or
20 -inch coulter blades. Disks provide
maximum incorporation of residue.
Coulters should be selected for use in
heavy residue which requires max-
imum cutting and slicing action.
The chisel plow shanks are arrang-
ed in two ranks. They may be equip-
ped with three-inch (standard) or
four -inch (optional) shovels to stir the
soil and incorporate some of the
residue. Both coulters and chisel
plows are mounted on spring-loaded
frames to permit operation in rocky
soil conditions.
New John Deere 710 Mulch Tillers
are available in 6'3" or 8'9" widths,
the smaller width for use with 60 to 85
hp. tractors and the wider model for
use with 80 to 120 hp. tractors.❑
