Equipment
operators must
signal intentions
Ontario's Highway Traffic Act
states quite specifically that all vehicle
operators must signal their intention
to turn.
Many car drivers don't seem to be
aware of the hazards posed by Targe,
slow moving farm equipment. In
some cases, they ignore flashing lights
and signals. Hopefully, there will he a
concerted effort to inform drivers
about these matters in the future.
Farm equipment operators are
obligated to meet the requirements of
the Highway Traffic Act. Consider
that:
1. An operator could be severely in-
jured or killed in the event of a colli-
sion. At the very least, costly equip-
ment damage is a certainty in any
crash.
2. If your equipment isn't properly
equipped with signal lights, you could
be charged under the Act. Serious
liability consequences could arise if
such equipment is involved in a colli-
sion that results in injury or death to
others.
As with most safety matters, risks
can be reduced during highway
transport of equipment through the
judicious application of common
sense. Of course, you still have to
comply with the law. Most of us
aren't going to relish the expense of
adding proper lighting and signalling
devices to our equipment, particular-
ly in these difficult times. However,
we can be certain that the cost will be
minor compared with the financial
implications of a lawsuit! ❑
