The Rural Voice, 1985-11, Page 7duction to what we can sell at a pro-
fit, dividing the restriction evenly
among all producers.
It is reasonable to have the govern-
ment buy out producers in en-
vironmentally sensitive areas and
have the production facilities remov-
ed, only if there is a guarantee that
the production will remain out of the
system.
It is reasonable to try to find a way
to protect the dwindling numbers of
farmers by assuring them of stable
prices and production.
Under the Farm Products
Marketing Agencies Act and in co-
operation with federal and various
provincial governments, these things
are possible if we want them. We can
develop a marketing and production
plan on a provincial and then a na-
tional basis if we are willing to
negotiate in good faith.
Like Mr. Vos, I have spoken with
contacts in Ottawa, only I learned
that a two -price system is possible
depending on negotiations. But it is
only one of many directions that
should be explored when developing
the marketing and production plan.
It is also reasonable to implement
stabilization for hog producers in
Canada while steps are being taken
toward the establishment of an agen-
cy. It would be an investment in the
future.
If producers want changes, they
must inform councilmen of their
wishes, or elect councilmen who
represent their point of view. Voting
at your annual county meeting is the
right and democratic way of bringing
a new and positive future to the pork
industry.0
