Waterfurnace is a reversable heat pump; it extracts heat from the ground and distributes it in your home. This works because heat energy will always be transferred from a warm substance to a cool substance whenever the two come in- to contact with one another. Heat exchangers extract heat from the ground by pumping water from a pond, lake, well, or a closed ground loop, passing it through a heat ex- changer, then discharging it or recir- culating it back through the loop. The Waterfurnace system uses the closed loop, which has several advantages; it eliminates the frost problems possible when pumping from a pond in the winter; there is less possibility of trouble caused by impurities; and the water in a closed loop can be treated to prevent scale build-up. There are two loop systems, horizontal and vertical. The horizon- tal requires about 450 feet of 1 1/2 -inch plastic pipe per ton of unit to be buried 5 to 6 feet in the ground. The vertical unit requires several wells or holes to be drilled, about 150 feet of hole per ton of unit. The cir- culating pipes are suspended in these wells. A heat pump can have a coefficient of performance as high as 4. This means that for every dollar consumed by the heat pump, it produces four dollars worth of heat. The cost of installing a water - source heat pump furnace is several times that of a conventional heating system, but operational savings can be as high as 60 per cent.
