2 THE RURAL VOICE
EDITOR'S DESK
The latest buzzword in agriculture
is parity — if you haven't heard
already, almost everybody is talking
about it — but the problem is defin-
ing the concept. Alice Gibb explains
some of the historical aspects of
parity pricing and puts it into
perspective for the 1980s. Jack
Wilkinson, the outspoken vice-
president of the Ontario Federation
of Agriculture, looks at the implica-
tions of parity theories and offers
some suggestions of his own. "It
only happens a few times in
everyone's life that the conditions
are right for change," Wilkinson
says. The time for farmers to
develop a better marketing strategy,
he adds, is now.
"Dazzled by the mechanical
achievements of the past century, we
are prone to overlook the debt we
owe to the humble plow." This was
the opinion of a writer way back in
the 1920s. Fall is fast approaching
and we're back into a series of local
plowing matches and the big one —
the International Plowing Match —
will be held in Elgin County from
September 17 to 21. In the
Agricultural Flashback, the way to
go about organizing the ideal plow-
ing match — at least in 1923 — is
described. Then it's back to the pre-
sent and the events of the 1985
IPM.
There's more: a "chicken" man
applying his experience to breeding
cattle; crop specialist Mervyn Erb
telling us that soil tests and tissue
tests of plants go hand in hand;
notes taken on tours of area
pastures; and columnist Gisele
Ireland warning us in her inimitable
way that a farmer's horoscope
doesn't guarantee a predictable day.
