FARM ADVICE
Hay -crop silage
produces gas
During the past 22 years, 11 people
have died on Ontario farms as a result
of exposure to silo gas. An unknown
number have suffered some physical
injury. It is suspected that this
number is quite large and that some
have died later, although the cause of
death has been attributed to
pneumonia or other similar
respiratory ailments.
Up until last June, all of the silo
gas deaths have occurred in connec-
tion with silos containing corn silage.
Similar experience was reported from
the United States. As a result we were
lulled into believing that the silo gas
hazard did not exist with hay -crop
silage.
Then, on a Monday morning in
June of last year, two young farmers
in the Earlton area entered a conven-
tional tower silo containing hay -crop
silage which had been blown in the
previous Saturday. Almost im-
mediately they were overcome by a
gas which, from evidence given later
at a coroner's inquest, was shown to
be the deadly gas, nitrogen dioxide,
commonly called silo gas.
This sad experience has taught us in
a forceful manner that we must treat
conventional tower silos newly filled
with hay -crop silage in the same way
as those filled with corn or other
whole -plant material — as if they
contain dangerous amounts of silo
gas.
Farmers' experience indicates that
harmful levels of silo gas are produc-
ed only occasionally. In one sense the
occasional production of silo gas
makes it much more dangerous than
if it were always produced. When gas
is produced, we are unprepared and
problems often occur.
We must always be aware that
under certain weather and crop
management conditions which add
extra stress to the growing plants
there is the distinct possibility of silo
gas production whenever any type of
whole -plant silage is made. Unfor-
tunately, at the present time we are
unable to predict when this might
happen. We must treat each silo as if
the silo gas hazard were present, and
act accordingly.
Further information on silo gas
production, detection, and elimina-
tion is available from a number of
sources, including the various silo
