A line on the
Hydro towers...
The route chosen by Ontario
Hydro to take power from the Bruce
Nuclear Power Development to
London will most likely go through
Huron County, said Huron planning
director Gary Davidson at the June
county council meeting. The actual
choice of a preferred route or routes
will be announced by Ontario Hydro
in July.
There will most likely be one set of
lines going through Huron because
the proposed routes that do go
through Huron, according to the
Southwestern Ontario Route Stage
Study, have the least environmental
(including agricultural) and social im-
pact. The favoured routes include a
line through Huron and a second
power line outside of the county,
both with the destination of London,
to ensure system security. It is unlike-
ly that both corridors would be out of
commission at the same time.
At this point, the study committee
has ranked route M7 as its first
choice. This route is a new proposal
which takes the MI route and adds a
single circuit line from Bruce to Essa.
The M1 route, which is now ranked
as second choice, is identical to the
preferred MI route at the last round
of hearings.
Of the favoured routes at this time,
the only one that does not pass
through Huron County is M3, which
is the most expensive and would have
the highest environmental and social
impact, Davidson reported to Huron
council. Ontario Hydro also main-
tains that due to transient stability
problems (the inability of this line to
cope with power surges), M3 is no
longer a technically feasible route. It
is possible that this route may not
even be proposed as an option,
Davidson said.
