Glen White Awards
recognize local builders
Both technology and aspects of
animal husbandry are constantly
changing, so there is always a race to
build a better building. The Glen
White Building Awards recognize ex-
cellence in building. Two of the
award-winning builders this year are
local people.
Schafer Structures and Renova-
tions Limited of Shakespeare was the
winner in the dairy barns category.
The winning structure houses 50
milking cows, a calf nurser, and a
heifer area at the farm of Bill
McCallum near Stratford. The
building has a two by six laminated
floor in the hay storage area and a
canopied roof overhang on a milk
storage area with picture windows.
The Award of Merit for dairy barn
construction was presented to Frey
Brothers Ltd. of Hawkesville, near
Elmira, for their construction of
Henk Boresen's free stall dairy barn
in Stratford. This barn has a
cathedral ceiling, a natural ventila-
and slatted floor system over liquid
manure tanks.
At the Canadian Farm Builders
Association's 1985 National Conven-
tion, Frey Brothers Ltd. was also the
winner of the prestigious Master
Award for the construction of a dairy
barn for Joe Mazenauer of Grand
Valley.
In the Other Livestock Buildings
category, Kase Vanden Heuvel Con-
struction of Goderich took top
honours for the construction of a
poultry barn built in Hanover for
Murray Crich. The main reasons for
the recognition of this building were
the diagonal breaks on the cornice
facing, caging in the side-wall open-
ings, and the finishing off of the ceil-
ing into the air exhaust section, as
well as the interior finish and the col-
our co-ordination outside.
The judges for the competition
were Jack Pos and Al Singleton,
both from the School of Engineering
at the University of Guelph.0

Ontario Reporters' Association
(ORA) Contest for her feature about
the Ontario Centre for Farm
Machinery and Food Processing. The
award was for clarity and the impor-
tance of the story which details how
small business and the farmer can
benefit from the development of
ideas.
This is the second time that Alice
Gibb has won an award for an article
in The Rural Voice. Her first award
was for her feature story about farm
activist Malcolm Davidson (The
Rural Voice, December 1983), whose
drive, enthusiasm, and passion
changed the nature of Ontario
agriculture before his untimely death
in 1970.
Awards were presented at the
ORA's fifth annual convention at the
Hamilton Press Club in June. Judges
were Mark Laing and Henry
Overduin of the University of
Western Ontario's School of Jour-
nalism. The ORA is a voluntary, non-
profit organization dedicated to ad-
vancing reporters' interests and rais-
ing professional standards. For more
