On Pork Congress Press Day, the festive spirit officially began as Bruce
Bergsma, first vice-president of the 1985 Ontario Pork Congress, Stratford
Mayor Ted Blowes, and Congress President Dale Thompson raised the of-
ficial Pork Congress flag on a windy June afternoon.
This pig sculpted by Umberto Fusari for the Perth County Pork Producers
hogged attention at the 12th annual Ontario Pork Congress. Rob
Vanderwyst of St. Thomas stopped to pat the pig as he and his friend Will
Vandenberk toured the event.

Stratford hosts
successful
Pork Congress
Stratford is proud to be the home
of the Pork Congress, now in its
twelfth year. The three-day congress,
Canada's largest exhibition for all
segments of the pork industry drew
approximately 10,000 visitors. When
earlier this year the congress commit-
tee discussed moving the event to
London, Stratford Mayor Ted
Blowes began to sell his city, hard and
long, said Dave Ireland, past vice-
president of the Pork Congress.
Ireland encouraged pork producers to
sell their product in the same way. A
few of the highlights:
On his last day as Minister of
Agriculture and Food, Ross
Stevenson spoke to those attending
the Ontario Pork Congress. The ef-
fectiveness of his message was limited
because of the expected demise of the
Ontario Progressive Conservative
government in the legislature that
day. Photo by Stephanie Levesque
