The Rural Voice, 1985-07, Page 31tain carcinogens, and so cause a pro-
blem with pesticide run-off, Scrimger
has decided to rely more on tillage
than on chemicals for weed control.
Tillage, like composting, requires
good management. Even cover crops
are useless if they are plowed under
too deeply because then they don't
build up the soil humus.
Tillage obviously affects aeration,
drainage, and decay systems, each of
which are essential to manage
especially well under organic condi-
tions.
Scrimger describes the current state
of organic farming as "transitional."
Scrimger, like the other farmers who
strongly believe that organic
agriculture is on the cutting edge of
the future, will continue to be an in-
novator in these types of cropping
practices.
Pat Cook operates a farrow to finish
farm near Sebringville and is always
looking for the best way to use his
manure resources. With that in mind,
he and his neighbour, H.L. Richard-
son (in the forefront), attended the
organic farming day at Oak Manor
Farms near Punky Doodle's Corners.
Creating a compost with manure as a
base was one of the demonstrations at
the open house.
