to variations in the amount of water
applied, the yield increases in the
Utah trials were consistent with those
in other states, especially as they
relate to foliar -applied micro-
nutrients.
Tindall's experiment showed that
compared with check plots, the
average yields of Monona potatoes (a
processing variety) increased by
almost 11,000 pounds per acre. The
result came with the foliar application
of 10 pounds of a commercial pro-
duct containing soluble phosphorous
and two quarts of another commer-
cial product supplying potassium and
the micronutrients zinc, iron, and
magnesium.
When half these amounts were ap-
plied, yields increased by 6,000
pounds per acre. An intermediate ap-
plication rate increased yields by
more than 8,000 pounds per acre.
Tindall said results were consistent
with those from similar research in
Idaho.
The nutrients in Tindall's research
were applied in a split application,
once when plants were 8 to 10 inches
high and again two weeks later. He
said nutrients can be applied through
a sprinkler irrigation system or aerial-
ly.
Tindall said that although
preliminary results appear to favor
the technique, more research is need-
ed to determine whether the yield in-
crease resulted from the
micronutrients or the phosphorus and
potassium.
"It doesn't appear to be feasible to
meet all of a plant's requirements for
major nutrients (phosphorus and
potassium) through foliar applica-
tion," he said.
He added that foliar applications
are not a substitute for a soil fertility
program. They are an adjunct and
should be used only when plant tissue
and soil analyses indicate these
nutrients are required.()
