because of this" (have you had your
wheat tested for protein at your local
elevator lately?). Real dumb. Or it
was said, "They'll test your wheat for
Bayleton and if it's found `they'll'
destroy your whole crop." Also real
dumb, and with no truth whatsoever.
And why? Because no one had the
guts, no one would take the respon-
sibility to allow the use of this pro-
duct, even though it was registered
for use. Something is rotten in the
state of Denmark.
As you all know, Mother Nature is
two weeks ahead this year. As of June
20, our strawberry crop had peaked,
my potatoes were in flower, and from
what I saw, they would need to be
sprayed for leafhopper in a few days.
Root rot was already taking a signifi-
cant toll in white bean fields, and
slugs were also chewing up white
beans in certain fields. And barley
fields were loading up with powdery
mildew and leaf scald. Twitch was
growing wondrously well and
triazine-resistant weeds were evident.
You should also be on the look -out
for army worm. If you had them last
year, expect them to stop in for din-
ner this year. There are already in-
festations of army worm.
All this tells us one thing: get out in
your fields often, and right to the
back fence. All may not be well as
you think or hope. Rescue work can
still be done; by harvest time it's too
late. And when you're heading out to
the field, take along a shovel. The
part below the ground is as important
as the part above the ground. A
plant's roots are its feet as well as its
mouth.
The following article was taken
from the Utah Farmer -Stockman
magazine. These new types of foliar
nutrients will be tested in the Hensall
area this summer.
Potatoes may thrive on foliar feeding
Preliminary results indicate that
foliar feeding (applying nutrients
directly to leaves) may increase
potato yields by more than 10,000
pounds per acre, according to Dr.
Terry Tindall, extension soil scientist,
Utah State University. But, he added,
more research is needed to determine
why yields varied on some plots.
Foliar application of nutrients is
common in several other potato -
growing regions of the U.S., but
Tindall said it had not been known
whether there would be a yield
response under conditions in Utah.
Although yield increases attributed
to foliar application were not
statistically different, perhaps owing
