Start your engines. The tour con-
tinues. At 11 a.m., precisely on time,
the convoy rolls into Ray Hogan's
farm. As the drizzly rain increases in
strength and the temperature
decreases, Sadler Richards is
prepared. She forsakes her crisp,
classy look for a comfortable, prac-
tical one. With a change to work
boots and rain wear, she is ready for
the next part of the day.
Hogan brings his anhydrous ap-
plicator in from the field and joins
the group. As part of the planning for
Conservation Day, sites for the public
tour must be chosen. After visiting
several potential sites and
highlighting tillage and herbicide
practices there, the group takes a
lunch break at about 12:30 in the
farm kitchen. By this time, the group
has been rained on enough to look a
bit frazzled and to be chilled to the
bone. Brown -bag lunches and hot
cups of coffee are a welcome inter-
mission.
For almost three hours in the after-
noon, the group drives from site to
site, plodding through ditches and
fields and discussing the potential of

One of the tour sites on conservation day will be Hogan's field where a
berm (a soil conservation structure) was built last year. Ignoring the drizzly
weather, Sadler Richards and Julia Cooper listen as the Hogans describe the
drainage system.
