2 THE RURAL VOICE
EDITOR'S DESK
Various articles in this issue point
out a number of different ap-
proaches to farming.
Conservation practices as they ap-
ply to farming are one of the main
concerns of Jane Sadler Richards,
Senior Soil Conservation Advisor
for Huron County. Her goal is to
co-ordinate agricultural, soil, and
water conservation efforts in the
county, and she and her OMAF
team are planning for Conservation
Day to be held at Ray Hogan's farm
on July 9.
Farming organically is the answer
for Dave Reibling, who farms 350
acres at Punky Doodle's Corners
near Tavistock. Joe Smilie, a farmer
and consultant who attended
Reibling's annual open house at
Oak Manor Farms, notes that some
people call organic farming a
"return to the past." But Smilie
refers to it as being "on the cutting
edge of the future."
Mervyn Erb, crop specialist at
Hensall District Co-op, is angered
by the government's handling of a
particular fungicide. Though
farmers have required its use to pre-
vent crop disease, it is being held up
by restrictions.
Imports and exports are on Grant
Collins' mind. Collins, a regular
contributor to the Bruce County
newsletter page, is exasperated by
beef imports and the export ban on
pork going into the United States.
In further contrast, Andrew Dix-
on, a philosopher, farmer, and
retired teacher from McGillivray
Township, tells about his youthful
dream of farming, his goal to make
10,000 dollars and to live happily
ever after.
We should be so lucky.
