Groups update soil maps
If you see someone stepping over
your fence, scooping up two cups of
soil, climbing over the fence, and
driving away, don't be disturbed, it's
not a soil thief, it's a member of the
OSCIA Mapping Project.
The Ontario Soil and Crop Im-
provement Association, in coopera-
tion with the Ontario Institute of
Pedology and the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food, is in the pro-
cess of upgrading portions of the soil
maps for Huron, Perth, Bruce, Grey,
Wellington, and Waterloo Counties.
Seven employees have been hired
for the project through a Canada
Employment and Immigration Centre
Job Creation Program which spon-
sors the employees for the project and
pays travelling expenses.
The four field workers are: Tom
Vance, formerly of the Goderich
area; Jason Aurora, a University of
Guelph graduate; Natalie Pyskir,
who has her masters degree in
geography; and survey technician
Jeff Smalley of Stratford, who is a
graduate of Niagara College. Also
working on the project with McBride
and the field crew are Jim Butler of
the Guelph Agriculture Centre and
Chartered Accountants

Denise Carpenter, a Biological
Technology graduate. Carpenter will
be working in the lab analyzing the
soil samples brought in by the field
crew. The crew will be gathering
other information as well. They will
stop two or three times on a conces-
sion, hop over the fence, record the
slope length and slope angle of the
field, note the crop type in the area,
the degree of stoniness, and take the
soil sample to be analyzed.
The next phase of the project is
making up the erosion maps, which
McBride has already begun. She says
these maps may be passed on to local
Conservation Authorities and other
groups involved with soil erosion if
the maps receive approval and this
pilot project receives a positive
report. These maps. to be made in a
1:50,000 scale, will be useful in other
conservation projects.
If the project is successful, it will
prove that existing maps can be up-
dated without a full-scale soil survey.
McBride says that if all goes well, the
project will be expanded into other
areas of the province which are not
slated for regular soil survey updating
in the near future.❑
