The Lucknow Sentinel, 1993-11-24, Page 7Area youth serves as Page by Pat Livingston Evan Hickey, a Grade 8 student at St. Joseph's School, Kingsbridge, is another area youth who is mow more knowledgeable about the provincial legislative process. Evan, who is the son of Jim and Teresa Hickey, of R.R. 3, Auburn, recently returned from a six-week stint as a Legislative Page in Queen's Park, Toronto. Evan was quite surprised when informed that he was, accepted as one of 24 pages to serve during the fall session.. His sister, Amanda, was a page during the 1993 spring session. Evan said, "1 didn't expect two out of the same family would ever be chosen." Both . he and Amanda applied at the same time. Evan was unable to pick one particular aspect of the experience as the best. He talked about the great friends he made and said they arc already corresponding with each other and planning a reunion. It was a lot of fun living with another Page who resided in Mississauga, taking the Go Train and subway to Queen's. Park each day. He par- ticularly enjoyed visiting the Hard Rock Cafe, the CN Tower, and the Spaghetti Factory. Being a Page is not all fun. It is a time of learning as well, with the legislative process„ taught daily and math and French tutoring compul- sory. It's a great experience for these adults of tomorrow,• as they alter- nate between answering phones in the chamber office, running errands for the MPPs, working in the caucus rooms -and the press gallery. Evan was a- little surprised at the lack of numbers in the House during debates and said of those who were there, "I didn't think they acted that way." One bill debated was the Photo Radar Bill 47. I-fe said Premier Bob Rae took a lot of criticism after the federal election because of Audrey McLaughlin's poor showing. When asked if his experience as a Page had helped in making a career decision, Evan replied, "I'll be a farmer first and maybe some day that will lead td a political position involving agricultural."
