Box 2000, Oakville, Ontario 1615E4 Alone for eight months •from page 4 cabin. Game, fruit, and bird eggs were plentiful, but they were haunted by the night calls of the unfamiliar species of birds which had given the place its demonic name. For eight months, they did not see a ship and Marguerite's young man became depressed and physically ill. He died shortly before their child was born. Undaunted, Marguerite applied her hunting skills, using a matchlock gun her uncle had provided to harvest wild food. She told her biographer that she became so skilled' that on one day she kiiied three bears, including one that was "white as an egg," no doubt a polar bear that had drifted south on an ice pan. After 17 months on the island, the servant died and Marguerite's child soon followed. A year later, lonely but in good health, she was rescued by Breton fisherman. Ironically; Jean -Francois de Roberval's colony at Cap -Rouge, upstream from Quebec City was a dismal failure. Many colonists 'suffered from hunger, filth, cold and scurvy. before the expedition • disbanded. After her return to France, Mar- guerite de Roberval's triumphant survival in the New World was documented by Andre Thevet, the Geographer Royal to King Francois Thevet's successor was Samuel de • Champlain, who later helped es- tablished a successful colony at Port Royal that was based on the theory that it was possible for settlers to live off the land. What started with a tragic love story, set a pattern for survival in the New World. It was a good haul for a relationship gone sour .from page 4 counselling she required after the engagement was broken. Not too paltry a sum for having known the rancher for only seven . weeks. The plaintiff is quoted as saying that "It is a serious women's issue and one that hasn't received too much attention." I wonder if the jury would have come to the same conclusion if the plaintiff was a male, And I wonder how long it took the woman, who you will note was a lawyer, to research the books and come up withthe Breach of Promise Act. A United States matrimonial lawyer says the law was intended to allow brides or grooms to recover actual damages, such as rental fees for a reception hall, not the costs as- sociated with pain and suffering. All in all, it wasn't a bad haul for a seven -week relationship gone sour! Bruce County Board of Education Cole ' resigns; board won't reduce superintendents Downsizing in education won't affect' the number of superinten- dents for the Bruce County Board of Education. Tuesday, personnel superintendent - Paul Cole announced his resig- nation, effective January 31, 1994. Cole was recently hired as director g education for Chippewas of '4awash First Nations at Cape Broker, a position he earlier iescribed as a consultant's job. The Board accepted Cole's resignation, Ind assigned personnel superinten- lent's duties to school superinten- lent John Lennon. Then the board launched the search for a new superintendent. "Is it,fundamental in this climate to fill a position with that size of pay cheque?" asked trustee Gord Thompson. Director of Education Paul Mar- tindale said the Bruce board is "a little below average" in its ratio of supervisory officers to students. "We are downsizing, but not that position," Martindale said, noting there are "no boards" in Ontario without a supervisory —'-offrcer- responsible for personnel issues. Martindale said, "I think it's clear we need to maintain strong senior administration to deal with the complexities we face." Later, Thompson said he raised the issue of hiring a highly -paid superintendent during tight financial times "because I knew it was a question that would be asked in my neck of the woods." Thompson alsd said he was satisfied with Martin - dale's explanation that having a superintendent "was the way to go". Martindale `said the Bruce Board downsized in the last two years by eliminating 13 jobs and $800,000 worth of budget at the ad- ministration centre in Chesley. Thompson said among the jobs eliminated were one supervisor and at least one principal working from the board office. At the other end of the pay scale, custodial workers have been asked to double up on. duties without increasing their' hours. Meanwhile, Cole was ' lauded by trustees for his contributions to the board. "We worked together 25 or 30 years in one capacity or another," said Ray Fenton. "We've seen a lot of water go under the bridge, whether in school administration or negotiations," said the former SDSS. principal. "I've never met a more organized person than Paul Cole." "We certainly appreciated the —work—Paul Cole --has- done—for the negotiating committees," said trus- tee and former board chair David Inglis. "His way of working with staff and trustees to come up with agreements is really appreciated." "We never saw him in a bad mood," agreed trustee veteran of several negotiating ' committees Alvin Thompson. Positive mental health promoted during display The Canadian Mental Health Association/Huron County Branch, has recently begun making anti - stigma presentations to the public and high schools of Huron County. Erasing stigma, destructive and Untrue messages associated with mental illness, is a priority of the Canadian Mental Health As- sociation. This 20 minute presentation is presented during school assemblies and includes two originally written songs performed by Kim Souch and is followed by . a talk to the audience. The theme of the presen- tation is to promote positive mental health, erase the stigma associated with mental illness and to outline the role of CMHA/Huron Branch and those in the audience in improving their mental health and destroying the stigma of mental illness. The students and teachers are told about the importance of self-esteem, how you look at your- self, and acceptance and respect towards the differences in all of us. Several schools throughout Huron County have already participated in this presentation. The reaction of the students and teachers is en- thusiastic and positive. Many ques- 'turn to page 9
