strong opinions on
handling warden's vote
Bruce County councillors resisted
the urge to go back to traditional
methods in electing.the warden.
They voted 51 - .20 against the
executive committee's
recommendation to use an open
vote for warden and highways
committee, as was done until 1990.
There were strong ,opinions on
both sides ofthe issue.
We owe it to the public (on
ballot, which is first on the test.

Andrews made a motion that "the.
rest of recorded votes be held in
reverse order."
Brant Reeve David Thomson was
not so light-hearted at the results.

"Sheane added that the open vote is .
democratic, and said, "If you can't
stand up and (ie counted, then
maybe you shouldn't be. here,"
Amabet Reeve Bill Ferris said he
has "no qualms" about letting his
vote be known, but said the open
vote "does lead to strong feelings
and animosity." He said a recorded
vote should be used in wardens'
elections, because it gives bigger
municipalities more clout.

Andrews said it's difficult enough
to keep friction out of things"
without adding the "scars" of an
open vote. He also attacked the
tradition of electing the highways
committee, saying it puts the
committee "on a pedestal" and
leaves the committees that are filled
by appointment to be ranked below
highways.
When it came tune to vote on the
issue, Andrews requested a
recorded vote in reverse order to
break what he considers a pattern of
the majority voting opposite to his
