The Lucknow Sentinel, 1993-02-17, Page 19It's do or die tonight for Lucknow's Lancers The Lucknow Lancers lost two rough games on the weekend as Lion's Head tied the best of five series at two games each. Friday night in Lucknow the visitors scored three times in the second for a 6-3 lead and held on in the third for a 7-6 win. The Lancers held a 4-3 lead heading into the third period on Sunday but couldn't hold off the Lion's Head attack as they struck for five goals to take an 8.6 win. Scott Hackett picked up four goals over .,the weekend while Chris Irwin and Steve Simpson added twq each with singles going to Art Clark, Brad Priestap, Jeff Gammie and Grant Gilchrist. Chris Fryfogle, in the Lancer net, held the local team close in both games. Game five goes Wednesday night at 9 p.m. in Lucknow. Atom house league team plays crowd -pleasing hockey On Feb. 13, the Atom B's took part in the Minto Tournament, .held to Palmerston. The first. game of the day was against the Walkerton Mavericks. Walkerton jumped into an early two goal lead and it wasn't until Peter Nadasdy's goal, assisted by Andy Evans, near the end of the second period that Lucknow got on the scoreboard. However, three more goals by Walkerton put tlie game out of reach, with the final score Walkerton 5, Lucknow 1. The second ,game was played against Minto #1. Clinton Gunter's slapshot from the point was deflected into the net to put Lucknow into the lead, only to have Minto come back to tie with three minutes left. This sent the game into sudden death overtime. Rules of the tournament had each` team starting with a goalie and three skaters for , two minutes, (Matthew Martin, Andy Evans, and Steven .Hare) then two skaters for one minute, (Evans and Hare) then one skater for one minute (Hare). When neither team was able to' score, a sudden death shootout decided the result. The three players ATOM sr chosen for Lucknow were Jeff Havens, John VanDiepenbeek and Matthew Martin. On the fust attempt Havens hit the top corner of the net while Lucknow goalie Andrew Pickard stopped the Minto player cold. Final score Lucknow 2, Minto 1. The win sent Lucknow into the consolation championship game against a strong Port Elgin team. Despite numerous key saves by Pickard, Port Elgin scored twice in the first period and' added another in the third. Lucknow fought back when Hare scored on a two man rush with VanDiepenbeek, and Evans hit the net after a pass up the boards by Jonathon Drennan. Strong defence by. Chad Foster and Mike Wyndham also helped keep the score close but Port Elgin held on to win 3 to 2. Steven Hare was chosen to be MVP for Lucknow, winning a hockey stick. Congratulations to'the. team forthree well played games. Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, Win first round robin game The Lucknow Atom house league is playing their frust round robin against Kincardine I. Kincardine opened the scoring in the fust game, but Lucknow tied it when Jeremy Clough dented the twine on a pass from Matthew Martin in the corner. Lucknow took the lead early in the second period after Steve Hare suck -handled past defence, with the assists going to Andrew Pickard and Andy Evans. Ten seconds later Kincardine tied the game. Hare scored his second of the night, when his shot hit the corner, assisted by Pickard and Peter Nadasdy. Early in the third Kincardine took the lead and again Lucknow ,fought back' with a .goal from Clough assisted by Chad Foster. Lucknow took the lead on a power play goal by Evans assisted by Hare. Kincardine pulled their goalie but Lucknow held on to win with a 5-4 score. Lucknow meets Kincardine in Pee Wee playoff series Kincardine came to town Satur- day night to play the first game of the round-robin PeeWee house league series. Lucknow came out playing pretty well against a very hard-hitting visiting team. In the fust period, Lucknow had several good rushes into their opponents zone, but was unable to light up the scoreboard. In the second period, both teams spent considerable time in the pen- alty box. Lucknow put considerable pressure on while having the man advantage, but couldn't find the weak spot between the Kincardine pipes. At the end of the second, Kincardine led 2-0. - PEE WEE Kincardine continued to make good on their man advantage times in the third period. Lucknow spent considerable time in Kincardine's end, but in the dying minutes of the game Kincardine scored two more goals to win the game 4-0. Each line made some good plays during the game which combined with some good goal tending led to a much improved outcome from the last time these two teams met. Novice A's down Port Elgin The Lucknow Novice A's played Port Elgin 'on Feb. 11, to get ready for the playoffs. Devin Petteplace opened the scoring at 8:32 of the fust assisted by Tyler Hamilton. Russell Mann scored from Jeff McNee to give Lucknow a 2-0 lead after one period. • In the second period Mann scored unassisted and scored again from Ricky Andrew to lead 4-0. Petteplace scored unassisted at the 2:16 mark and Port Elgin scored. their first goal of the game shortly after but Tim Eadie assisted by Bob Raymond gave Lucknow a 6-1 lead after two periods. In the third period Port Elgin scored tocut the lead to 6-2 but Mann scored his fourth goal of the lame assisted by Petteplace and Brian Stanley closed out the scoring with an assist going to Hamilton. Final score Lucknow 8, Port Elgin 2. February 17, 1993 — Pale 19 Pee Wees played great in Chesley series The Peewee "A" team came up against a yery tough Chesley team in fust round playoffs. Lucknow played the fust game in Chesley and won 3-2. The team trucked downtown for the second game with hopes to finish them off. By the third period Lucknow was ahead 3 to 0. Chesley fought back tremen- dously hard and won 4 to 3. The third game in Lucknow was a humdinger to watch. Right off the bat in the fust, Ean Moffat blew the pants of the Chesley goalie, assisted by Jonathan Chilton. Chesley scored once as well and that's how it stayed until the dreaded 10 min- ute overtime. ' One minute' into the overtime Chad Freeman stunned the Chesley goalie on passes from Craig Moffat and Brent Cameron which earned a gigantic Lucknow cheer. The downer came when Chesley scored twice around the 1:58 minute mark. That was the end of the. game. Although despondent, the team had played excellent hockey. Getting put out in the first round, Lucknow started a playoff round with Howick. We won with awesome fashion 5-2. Goals were scored by Ean Moffat, Tim Yissor, Chad Freergtin, Craig Moffat and Jonathan Cltilton. Assists by Chad Freeman, Dale Courtney (2), and Ean Moffat. Our next home game is Saturday at 4:15. Lucknow has been doing well in exhibition games winning against Wingham 7-3 and Blyth 3-2.
