Grey County's 1983-84
Dairy Princess is Shelley Barfoot
The Grey County Milk Producers Association chose Shelley Bullock as their
1983-84 Dairy Princess in Durham on Saturday, October 29. Four con-
testants took part in the competition. From left: Marlene Parkin, 1980-81,

Children should grow up with
sound nutrition and Shelley Barfoot
intends to help kids become more
aware of what they are eating and
drinking so that they can grow into
healthy adults. This is one goal she
has set for the future year as she
enters her reign as Grey County's
1983-84 Dairy Princess.
Shelley was one of four contes-
tants taking part in the competition
sponsored by the Grey County Milk
Committee which was held in the
Durham Community Centre recently.
Marlene Parkin, Grey county's dairy
princess for the past two years and
finalist at the CNE provincial compe-
tition for both those years handed her
crown over to Shelley, the twenty-
year -old daughter of Ken and Barb
Barfoot of R.R. 3, Hepworth.
"We stress quality rather than
quantity in Grey County," Marlene
commented, with reference to the
number of contestants who were
judged on personality, poise, enthu-
siasm, knowledge and extra -curricu-
lar activity. Judges for the competi-
tion were Irene Neal, Vice -Chairman
of the Wellington County Board of
Education; Allan Ross, representing
the O.M.M.B., Region 10, and
VOICE, DECEMBER 1983
Walter Hammel from the Bruce
County Milk Committee.
Shelley is well qualified for her new
role as dairy princess. She was
runner-up to Marlene Parkin in the
dairy princess competition in 1981
and was the Grey County 4H Queen
in 1982. She has just completed four
4H clubs this year including crops and
veterinary clubs as well as two dairy
calf clubs and has shown her calves at
nine fairs with good results.
She enjoys helping on her parents'
farm, "Kenarbara Farms." She is
currently enrolled in the two year
agricultural program at OAC in
Guelph and hopes to become involved
with 4H and Jr. Farmer programs in
the future within the Rural Organiza-
tions and Services branch of the
Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
Mary Golem, Grey county dairy
princess co-ordinator and former
county dairy princess herself an-
nounced her resignation. "The pro-
motion of milk has to be a full-time
job," she said. She felt that she could
not dedicate as much time as she'd
like to her position. Marlene Parkin
will assume the role of co-ordinator
and will organize activities for the
dairy princess including store promo-
tions and school activities. ❑
