You could work in the developing world through CUSO, Canada's largest indepen-
dent international development organization. A variety of agriculture positions
are available, including:
Assistant Research Officer (Crops)
This position with the Ghana Crops Research Institute is part of a national pro-
ject to develop maize and grain varieties and cultivation techniques suitable for
small farmers. Primary duties are to supervise the installation and operation of
field and laboratory equipment and to train staff in its use and maintenance.
Assistance in the day-to-day operations of the research stations would also be in-
volved. Applicants should have an agriculture degree/diploma specializing in
crops, extensive experience with farm machinery and a willingness to travel.
Village Development Workers
Papua New Guinea needs an agriculturalist to assist village groups -- primarily
with improvement of crop, garden and livestock production. Other skills relevant
to overall community development would be needed, such as knowledge of
carpentry, nutrition, small business or mechanics.
Contracts are for two years. Salaries are low ($4,000 - $8.000 per annum). but are
adequate for overseas' living costs. Placement takes at least six months, so app-
