WHAT'S NEW?
Controlled -release
Elanco, Division Eli Lilly Canada
In., has introduced a new, controlled -
release implant for steers, that im-
proves average daily gain and feed ef-
ficiency; and works two to three times
longer than conventional products,
eliminating the need to reimplant.
Compudose, the name suggesting
"computed dosage," provides for
gradual release of a natural steroid,
estradiol-17B, for at least 200 days.
Compudose is already in use in the
United States and other major beef
producing countries. Field trials con-
ducted in Canada report an average
daily gain improvement over non -
implanted steers of 12.7 per cent and
an improvement in feed efficiency of
6.4 per cent. Extensive field testing in
the U.S. resulted in an improvement
of 17.4 per cent in average daily gain
and 7.4 per cent in feed efficiency
over non -implanted steers. ❑
New watering units
A new line of livestock watering
units was introduced at the interna-
tional Plowing Match by W. R.
Smale Co. The Smale Livestock
Waterer will be available in three
models to serve up to 200 head of cat-
tle.
Each Smale waterer incorporates
two 300 watt electric heaters for a
total of 600 watts per unit -- sufficient
to keep them ice -free even through a
Canadian winter. Other design
features which make the new waterer
superior to imported float waterers
include heavier metal throughout,
more insulation, a hinged tip -up
trough for easier maintenance and a
simple non -corrosive plastic valve
that won't plug with sand, -)et can
take pressures up to 75 pounds.
For more information, contact
your local Smale dealer or W. R.
