Farmers should
work together
The Annual Regional Meeting to
elect OFA directors and delegates to
Convention from South & West
Bruce was held recently at Hillcrest
School in Teeswater. Harry Zwerver,
Executive Director of the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture, was guest
speaker.
Zwerver covered many topics of
interest to the farmers in Bruce
county. OFA is presently considering
some changes in the organization
and has drafted a "Future Direc-
tions" paper for Convention, Nov-
ember 28, 29 and 30th. All counties in
Ontario have had an opportunity to
review and most have contributed to
this paper with regards to objectives,
membership, structure, lobbying,
communications, finance and on-
going service development.
Good news from OFA indicated
that the budget has been balanced and
the past fiscal year-end showed a
small surplus, although the need for
secure financing for the future is very
necessary.
Zwerver says that Canadian con-
sumers are spending only 15.8 per
cent of disposable income on food
while the European Economic Coun-
cil figures show Europeans are spend-
ing 40 per cent of their disposable
incomes on food.
He also touched briefly on lobby-
ing efforts of the past year and spoke
about Canagrex and Bill C653.
A question period followed with
many farmers taking part. Frustra-
tion in the farming community was
noted, with new action groups ap-
pearing on the scene.
Delegates were chosen to attend the
OFA convention:
