The Rural Voice, 1983-11, Page 54PERTH COUNTY PORK PRODUCERS' NEWS Ontario Pork Report on the O.P.P.M.B. Major Staff Changes at O.P.P.M.B. General Manager, Helmut Loewen, announced several major staff changes at the Semi -Annual Meeting in Toronto on September 15th. Helmut said the changes were made to strengthen the management of the yard system and further improve the flow of hogs. This part of the Board's activities has become big business and now makes up 35 per cent of the Board's budget. Well known Sales Manager, Jim Rollings, becomes Livestock Marketing Manager. Jim will have responsibility for everything from the farm gate to the kill floor. Besides smoothing out the flow of hogs, Jim will be given the task of looking after licencing, trucking, yard leases and humane handling. Lloyd's Smit's job as Supervisor of Livestock Marketing will not change very much. He will continue to work with the yard managers and truckers to assure the system works efficiently. Lloyd is also responsible for yard construction and planning. Jim Rollings will be replaced as Sales Manager by IRV STINSON, who worked as Jim's assistant for 14 years. Irv, like Jim, has over 25 years service to the Board. He has a broad and detailed knowledge of the industry. The changes took place Oc- tober 1st. Also at the Semi -Annual Meeting, Chairman Doug Farrell announced a totally new job. Tim France joined the Board as Information Officer at the beginning of September. Tim will be responsible for providing the Directors and the public with more information. He has a broad background in agriculture and economics and will add considerably to the Board's ability to function effectively. Board Organizes Trade Mission to Caribbean Chairman Doug Farrell told delegates to the Semi -Annual Meeting that the Board has organized a national trade mission to promote pork in the Caribbean. The two day mission will leave the Barbados on November 3rd, will be made up of packers, brokers and federal government officials. Producers will be represented by an O.P.P.M.B. delegation and spokesmen from the Manitoba and Saskatchewan Board. The Quebec Board has also shown interest. Forward Contracting Postponed The starting date for the forward contracting program has been postponed to the end of October to provide time for producers to examine the details of the program and to sign-up. A registration of 200 producers would allow the program to go ahead on October 31st. At the O.P.P.M.B. Semi -Annual Meeting, Chairman Doug Farrell issued a challenge to the councilmen "to get 200 producers, and better yet 300 producers signed up" for the forward contracting program. To register for the programs, or to obtain information, phone (416) 621-1874 or drop a note to the O.P.P.M.B., Box 740, Etobicoke, Ontario. In his address to the Semi -Annual Meeting, Chairman Doug Farrell, stressed producers must do more research if we are to remain competitive. This winter the Board will be asking producers to increase the research funds from four cents to six cents a hog. The Board will also be asking the provincial government for more funds for swine research. Research projects approved are: PG. 52 THE RURAL VOICE, NOVEMBER 1983 R.R. Hacker and L.A. Pieper - Computerized Swine Production and Management Teaching Model. O.M.A.F. Cut Backs Let the government know O.P.P.M.B. Board Members are concerned that planned cut backs in service provided by O.M.A.F. will adversely affect the interests of producers and the agricultural industry. For example, Ag. Reps. may be so busy that they are unable to maintain contact with commodity groups like the pork producers. Where O.M.A.F. cut backs are proving a problem, this information must be communicated by producers to those in a position to help. County Associations and Councilmen should make their views known to their M.P.P.'s. Swine Breeders Meeting on Performance Testing The Ontario Swine Breeders's Association held a general meeting to look at ways of improving swine per- formance testing at Alliston on Oc- tober 17th.
