At the annual regional meeting in
Markdale on September 28 the
following were elected regional direc-
tors for Grey county: Grey East: Clay
Schwegler, R.R. 1, Flesherton; Grey
North: Arnold Oliver, R.R. 8, Owen
Sound; Grey South: Bill Pullen, R.R.
1, Proton Station.
Delegates to the O.F.A. convention
in November are: Grey East: Bud
Hill, Flesherton; Bessie Saunders,
R.R. 4, Meaford; Lyall Jariett, R.R.
3, Flesherton. Grey North: Roger La-
mont, R.R. 8, Owen Sound; Carl
Spencer, R.R. 4, Tara; Don Hill,
R.R.6, Owen Sound. Alternate:
George Bothwell, R.R. 1, Owen
Sound. Grey South: Murray Clarke,
R.R. 2, Durham; Ted Jacobs, R.R. 2,

In this report, Clay Schwegler
reminded everyone that the O.F.A.
board of directors consists of
representatives from 100 different
regions of Ontario, together with ap-
proximately 25 representatives of
commodity groups. These directors
are the policy making body of O.F.A.
and actions taken by our President
and executive follow this direction.

Clay is a member of the Environ-
ment Committee. The mandate of
this committee includes Ontario
Waste Management Corporation
dealing with industrial waste; the
Ministry of Environment's proposal
for waste management in Ontario
dealing with municipal waste; the
proposed provincial sludge program
dealing with sewage; wetland evalua-
tion; the agricultural code of practice;
O.F.A.'s proposed agricultural
development and protection act;
water quality, soil conservation,
agricultural chemicals, etc.
M.P.P. Bob McKessock was the
guest speaker. He advised everyone to
check their assessment notices this
year and appeal any mistakes. Other
topics were the Niagara Escarpment,
the beef industry which is very
unstable in Ontario, the Young
Farmers' Program and the Hydro
corridor. McKessock also answered
many questions from the floor.
Doug Gowanlock reported that a
few more memberships are needed to
qualify for the year-end rebate from
O.F.A. He explained the rules for
voting for regional directors and
delegates. Bob Leslie and Barry
Tolton helped.
A directors' seminar will be held in
December or January. Doug asked
for two people to help co-ordinate
this seminar.
Grey Federation of Agriculture was
invited to meet with the N.D.P. Task
Force on October 5 in Wingham. The
directors agreed to present a brief.
Bill Pullen and Clay Schwegler met
with the president to draw up the
brief.
Normanby Federation of
Agriculture bought a breathing ap-
paratus several years ago. Their fire
department was no longer interested
in looking after this equipment. It
was offered to the county federation
if someone would give instructions
and pay insurance, etc. The Grey

Retiring president Bessie Saunders was
presented with a gift at the Grey Federation
Annual Meeting for her services to the
organization.
Federation agreed to take the
breathing apparatus. Barry Tolton,
Grey County Ag. Rep., was to see if
O.M.A.F. or the Markdale Fire
Department would look after it.
On September 20, O.F.A. pre-
sented a brief to the provincial
cabinet and later to the N.D.P.
caucus. Murray Clark, chairman of
the O.F.A. Hydro Committee and
President Bessie Saunders were pre-
sent from Grey County.
On September 8, I was one of the
judges for the 4-H King and Queen
contest at the Owen Sound Fair. Ron
Lipsett and I judged the boys while
Audrey Spence and Terry Harley
judged the girls. Unknown to the
judges, a brother and sister were pick-
ed as winners. Sandra and Glenn
Abercrombie of St. Vincent Town-
ship were the winners.
A meeting was held in Markdale to
plan for the 1984 Grey -Bruce Farmers
Week to be held in Hanover the first
week of January. Monday will be
crops day; Tuesday - Dairy and
Sheep; Wednesday - Farm and Home
Management Day and Horses; Thurs-
day - Swine and Goats; Friday - Beef.
The registration and lunch fee will re-
main the same. Farm Safety will be
included each day. ❑
