OUT FOR THE DAY
On the road in Bruce county
by Sheila Richards
Bruce County has much to offer
the summer and winter vacationer as
well as the day traveller. This month's
outing begins at Wiarton --- Gateway
to the Bruce.
No doubt this town of 2100 will be
familiar to many of you because of
the fall cattle sale, but take time to
visit in Wiarton and then have a
leisurely drive to Colpoy Bay, Cape
Croker, Hope Bay, Rush Cove and
finish at Lion's Head.
Wiarton's main street has some
fine old buildings, several restaurants
and gift shops. The Colpoy Gift
Shop, soon to be known as Stoeders,
features attractively displayed pot-
tery, a nice corner of baby items as
well as other handwork. A visit to the
showroom of International Wood-
working Ltd. on Claude Street, a
privately owned company that makes
rustic cedar furniture, is also worth a
stop. Using local cedar, good quality
furniture is produced which is ideal

for cottages, recreation and family
rooms and the hotel and restaurant
trade.
At Howell's Fish Market on Divi-
sion Street introduce yourself to
Mary Howell who has had a stand at
the Owen Sound Farmers' Market for
twenty-six years. Whitefish, splake,
perch, pickerel, smelt all freshly
caught are delivered to the store dai-
ly. You'll find stuffed whitefish and
splake ready to be popped into the
oven. You should try the house
specialty which is smoked whitefish
and splake done on the premises.
The Spirit Rock Motel provides a
reasonably priced menu featuring
home -cooked meals with thickly slic-
ed bread as a special feature.
Wiarton also boasts the largest air-
port north of Toronto; a combined
coast guard flight service station is
located here. Visitors are welcome to
drop in and see the facilities.
When you leave Wiarton, go north
on Highway 6 and watch for the
