New Grey Federation executive
The 43rd Annual Meeting and Banquet for the Grey County Federation of
Agriculture was held at the Shallow Lake Community Centre on October
15.
At the meeting Don Hill, Sydenham Township, became president, replacing
Bessie Saunders, St. Vincent Township. First vice-president is Stewart
Bergstra, Keppel Township; second vice-president is Carl Spencer, Derby
Township. From left are Hill, Bergstra and Spencer. An amendment was
made to the constitution to include the immediate past president on the ex-
ecutive, bringing the executive to a total of eight members.
Specialized training
for farm labour
Farm labor requirements are not
expected to increase in the next four
years, but the demands for more spe-
cialized training will, according to the
first Ontario Farm Labor Survey.
The survey polled 900 Ontario
farmers to determine the current farm
labour force, projected employment
and training needs. The results show
77 per cent of Ontario farmers an-
ticipate their labour requirements
through to 1987 will be the same as
last year and also point to three major
training needs.
In its assessment of the current
workforce, the survey indicates about
one-third of dairy, poultry and beef
producers hire one full-time em-
ployee. The majority of fruit,
tobacco and vegetable growers hire
seasonal help, with 60 per cent hiring
casual labor. Fruit growers reported
hiring the greatest proportion of
casual labor.
Looking at training needs for
farmers and agricultural workers,
respondents pointed to the need for
more intensive training in farm
financial management, bookkeeping
and computer operation.
The movement toward increased
mechanization in agriculture is
reflected in the survey's call for more
training in farm safety, equipment
operation, maintenance and repair.
