Wins award for breeding
new strains of barley
Kenneth J. Kasha of Guelph, On-
tario received the Ernest C. Manning
Foundation's 1983 cash award of
$75,000 for outstanding innovation in
the development of food crop yields
to help feed a hungry world. His in-
novative technique, for breeding new
strains of barley in one-half the time
previously required, has placed
Canada in the spotlight of world
plant genetics.
After the first haploid plant was
discovered in 1922, many researchers
recognized that they could be
valuable in producing pure breeding
lines for crop development, and over
a forty -year period attempted this
cross, without success. In 1968, Dr.
Kasha and his co-workers undertook
studies to hybridize barley and
developed the bulbosum method.
This method of barley breeding has
not been patented and is used freely
throughout the world.
Ninety per cent of all barley is
grown for feed and Canada is the
largest exporter of barley in the
world. The implications of this
method are far-reaching, for it has
stimulated related research on other
crop yields, such as wheat.
Dr. Kasha grew up on a farm near
Lacombe, Alberta, graduated from
the University of Alberta with a
degree in Plant Science and is present-
ly with the Crop Science Develop-
ment of the University of Guelph. He
has been invited to speak in ten coun-
tries to describe his techniques, in-
cluding international meetings in
Japan, Chile, Great Britan and the
United States in 1981-82.

Foundation was established to
stimulate and recognize innovation in
Canada by honouring persons who
have created and promoted, in an
outstanding way, a new concept, pro-
cess or product which is beneficial to
Canada and society. This national
non-profit Foundation is funded by
contributions from individuals and
corporations from across Canada.
The Foundation's 1983 national
awards program received 113
nominations from throughout
Canada. These nominations were im-
pressive because of their quality as
well as the quantity, and illustrate the
exceptional innovative talent of
Canadians. Activity will continue, to
publicize the accomplishments of
these outstanding Canadians and to
encourage recognition of their con-
tribution to the well-being of people
not only in Canada but also
throughout the world.
The winner last year was Dr. Phil
Gold of Montreal for his discovery of
carcinembryonic antigen (CEA) and
its subsequent innovative application
as a breakthrough in the detection
and management of certain types of
cancer. D

standing between our urban and rural
communities. 3) To recognize in-
dividual farmers in various areas of
agriculture who excel in their par-
ticular fields.
The men or women who will be
selected as Outstanding Young

districts and provinces, will be sym-
bolic of the thousands of young
Canadians engaged in one of
