"It's important to know what ef-
fective lobbying is all about," says
McEwen. "Know when your political
representatives are just courteous or
if you have an effect on them. Learn
what the ministers can and can't do.
Look at the philosophy behind the
marketing boards. The competition
for the dollar is very clear."
McEwen says agriculture is inter-
national: "We used to think as long
as people were hungry, there would
be a place for Ontario food. That's
NEWS
not so. Now our food has to compete
for the same dollar as weapons and
other needs."
McEwen also noted that 20 per
cent of the diploma graduates are
from the city and a high percentage of
total graduates are women. "They're
a real mix of people and they'll
change the complexion of
agriculture," says McEwen. "They'll
have a better perspective on the
economic, political and social
changes taking place in agriculture.❑
Gaunt receives Federation Award
d
Murray Gaunt, farm editor at CKNX received the Huron County Federa-
tion of Agriculture A ward at the recent Federation Annual. The award,
originated in 1976 by Doug and Gerry Fortune, annually recognizes an
outstanding person in the community for his or her many contributions to
agriculture.
Gaunt, a former turkey and beef farmer, and his wife Pat are well-known
for their church and community involvements. Gaunt was farm editor at
CKNX between 1959 and 1962 and a member of Parliament from '62 to '81.
Once again, he is CKNX farm editor.
Gaunt was surprised earlier in the evening when his name was nominated
for presidency of the federation. He gratefully declined. After winning the
award Gaunt said he liked it "much better than the presidency." He also
said he would like to share the honour with his wife Pat, who kept the home
fires burning. From left: Murray Gaunt, H. C.F.A. president Tony McQuail
