Hartman farm are going into C.A.
this fall because Hartman speculates
that prices will go up since there
aren't as many apples around this
year as other years.
Grading and packing of apples is
mechanized and computerized at
Georgian Triangle Apples Ltd. The
apples are immersed in water, bin and
all, so that the apples float, avoiding
bruising. Sized chains carry the
apples to brushes which clean the
apple. Any fruit under 21/4 inches
falls through the chains and is used
for juice. A very fine spray of edible
citruswax is put on the fruit which are
then put through a dryer. A computer
sizes the apples for weight and
controls what size are being packed,
thereby putting them in appropriate
bins. A colour head sorts out any
fruit which doesn't have enough
colour to be considered a fancy apple.
The apple commission sets apple
prices by asking growers, packers etc.
what they feel the price should be,
and by taking into consideration the
volume of crop. Prices are currently
running at $10.80 per unit for fancy
fruit and five cents per pound for
juice apples. ❑
