Measures grain yields
An easily installed instrument for measuring grain yield
per hectare while a harvester is at work, developed by a
British specialist in farm electronics, is said to be Tess than
a quarter of the price of more complex instruments which
are intended for the same purpose.
The Universal Counter and its grain measurement ac-
cessories allows a farmer to compare yields with previous
years and keep a record of yield for different crops to
quickly find out how much he can expect from the sale of
his crop. A magnetic sensor in the discharge auger drive
sends signals to the instruments which displays the amount

of grain harvested in tonnes. A calibration factor is entered
into the instrument (obtained from measuring the weight
of the first load of grain after the instrument is fitted), and
thereafter it is only necessary to check the volume -weight
from time to time during the harvest in order to adjust the
calibration factor. The readings are normally within 1 per
cent of true weight under controlled conditions, but the
makers say that under field conditions an accuracy of 2 per
cent can be expected overall, with occasional variations on
individual loads not exceeding 5 per cent. A second sensor
in the grain tank ensures that the counter is switched off
when the contents are emptied.
Using two of the instruments, it is possible to measure
grain quantities and area harvested at the same time. The
figures displayed on the instruments make it simple to
calculate yield and rate of work.
The counters may also be removed from the harvester
and used for other farm jobs. They can be used for exam-
ple with transfer kits on tractors to measure area, or on
sprayers to measure flow, and with a second instrument on
a sprayer it is possible to measure area as well and thus
provide a flow rate. Enquiries to Crawfords of Alberta
