The Rural Voice, 1983-09, Page 51Vaccinate for Rabies
by Alma Conn D.V.M.
All too often the family pet is ex-
posed to a rabid animal and then
destroyed. That's no way to treat a
friend!
Rabies is a disease caused by a
virus; and, all warm-blooded animals
are susceptible to the disease. The
virus may be found in many tissues of
the diseased animal, but the most
common source of transmission from
animal to animal is by means of a
bite. Rarely, the disease may be
transmitted by virus contamination
of fresh, already existing wounds or
by contact with mucous membranes.
The virus may be present and
transmitted by an infected animal
several days prior to the onset of
clinical signs. The incubation period
varies, but generally is within 15 - 50
days and in rare cases even several
months.
If your pet is exposed to a confirm-
ed rabid animal you do not have to
destroy it. If the pet has been vac-
cinated on a regular basis or if the last
vaccination occurred within the
previous 12 months, you are required
to quarantine the pet for a period of
only 90 days. If, however, your pet
has not been vaccinated you must
quarantine for a greater period of
time, i.e. six months.
The quarantine does not have to be
done at a kennel nor at a
veterinarians. It may be simply and
inexpensively done at home. A few 2

x 4's and some wire can quickly be
built into a run. Inside the run you
need some form of protection from
the elements as well as one container
for food and one container for water.
You may not touch your pet during
the quarantine period; but, you can
still talk to it and ease the isolation iii
that manner.
Regardless of the breeding of your
pet, consider quarantining. All
animals are equally susceptible, the
disease does not discriminate.
If you haven't already done so, get
your pet vaccinated. Take advantage
of the free rabies clinics in your area.

ing place in Huron county in the.near
