winter wheat varieties
Two newly -licensed Ontario winter
wheat varieties, Augusta and Franken-
muth, rival existing Ilcensed varieties in
yield and quality, said crop scientist
Vaino Poysa of the Ontario college (OAC).
These varieties outyield Fredrick by six
per cent to eight per cent In Area II, the
central portion of the province and match
Fredrick's yield In Area I, southwestern
Ontario.
They also have a higher test weight

than the other recommended winter
wheat varieties, other than Fredrick. Both
have excellent milling and baking
qualities and are being welcomed by the
Industry.
Augusta has better resistance to leaf
rust and lodging than all others, except
Fredrick. Frankenmuth is superior to
Favor, Gordon and Yorkstar In terms of
lodging resistance and is similar to these
three with respect to resistance to leaf
rust.
Augusta and Frankenmuth are also ad-
ding to the long-term viability of wheat
production In Ontario which is of major
benefit to consumers.
"These new varieties mean higher
returns for Ontario winter wheat pro-
ducers In many areas of the province.
The new varieties, developed at
Michigan State university and tested ex-
tensively in Ontario by the Ontario
ministry of agriculture and food, were
licensed in March, too late to be included
in the ministry's 1983 Field Crop Recom-
mendations.
But commercial quantitates of seed of
both varieties will be available this fall.
W.G. Thompson and Sons Ltd. have ex-
clusive marketing rights In Canada to
Augusta and Frankenmuth,
respectively. C
