COVER: Over 190 interested people attended "Soil Conservation
Day" sponsored by the Huron Soil Conservation District. On right,
Pat Lynch, OMAF crop specialist. On left (with diagram) Ian
Deslauriers, Maitland Valley Conservation Authority. Also (with

farmers on a reforestation program. Photos by Sheila Gunby.
Interesting and innovative ideas and people in the farming
community are quite evident in this issue of The Rural Voice.
When you get them in combination, you get results like the
Huron Soil Conservation District, a grassroots soil conserva-
tion movement using the combined expertise of the Huron Soil
and Crop Improvement Association, OMAF and the conserva-
tion authorities. Their story is featured this month.
Next, a Bruce native, Mary Eadie, lives in Guelph, works in
Toronto but has kept her heart in Bruce County. As a home
economist public relations representative, she travels across
Ontario promoting beef and is presently preparing a kit about
the industry for elementary schools.
Is it true Blondes have more fun? Or do they just do well in
the feedlot? According to Tom Black, who farms west of
Belgrave, the wheat -coloured beef animal is showing promise.
He has been building his herd for the last eight years.
Any idea how time-consuming some of the jobs are on your
farm? Perry Van Osch, R. R. 7, Lucknow did a time and motion
study at chore time and was able, with a few simple pur-
chases, to save 268 hours a year. How did he do it? Look on the
Young Farmer page in this issue.
The situation with funds and the Farm Credit Corporation is
critical. Tony McQuail, president of the Huron Federation of
Agriculture, has a message for all farmers on the subject in the
Huron Federation newsletter on page 64.
If you've got any bright ideas - well, we need them - for
"Bright Ideas", ou "new idea" starting this month. Anything
that saves time, money, energy or wear and tear, just let us
know.
There's never any lack of material for The Rural Voice - so
many meetings of interest. We appreciate the submissions
sent to us as it gives us a cross-section of what's going on.
Keep us in touch with your organization or what's happening
in your area.
See you next month. ❑
