been host as many times as Canada. Bill
Lunn from Peace River, Alberta is CPA
president, but the invitation was carried
to the world organization by Robert
Timbers from Uxbridge, Ontario, Secre-
tary -Manager of CPA.
The first time a world plowing match
was held in Canada was in 1953 when the
competition was held in conjunction with
the International Plowing Match in
Northumberland/Durham Counties.
James Eccles of Peel County was the
first winner.
Subsequent world matches were held
in 1963 on the Conn Smythe farm at
Caledon and in 1975 at Whitby. The 1986
match will take place at the provincial
agricultural college at Olds, Alberta and a
tentative date has been set for the end of
May, 1986.
The 1983 competition was held last
May in Zimbabwe with twenty teams
competing (two plowmen from each
country). A member of the Austrian team
placed first with 344 points. Denmark
came second, followed by N. Ireland,
Germany and Sweden. Canada placed
23rd when Bob Brown from Ayr, Ontario
earned 292 points. Ken Ferguson of
Stouffville, Ontario placed 27th with 274
points. The United States team placed
35th and 40th.
World Plowing Matches are planned
ten years in advance and are scheduled
as follows:
1984 England 1989 Norway
1985 Denmark 1990 Spain
1986 Canada 1991 S. Ireland
1987 Austria 1992 N. Ireland
1988 U.S.A.
The same rules apply to both the
Canadian and the World matches. Plow-
men must first compete at a county
plowing match. They can then go to the
International Plowing Match where, on
the fifth day, they can compete in the
Ontario competition, plowing in two
classes: sod and stubble. The following
year they can compete at the Canadian
level.
At the world match, competitors once
again plow two plots, one sod and one
stubble. Each plot is 20 metres wide and
100 metres long and a plowman is
allowed three hours for each plot.
The Canadian Plowing Match is moved
from province to province each year and
this year will be held in Prince Edward
Island, August 24-27, at the Agriculture
Fairground at Dundas, P.E.I. Peace River
will host the 1984 Canadian match and
New Brunswick will be the site in 1985.
The best known plowing match in
Ontario is the International Plowing
Match which this year will be held near
Richmond, Ontario in the Region of
Ottawa -Carlton from September 27th to
October 1st. The IPM locations are
already chosen for the next four years:
1984 Wellington County at Teviotdale
1985 Elgin County
1986 Hastings County
1987 Grey County
Whether or not you are a plowing
competitor, you will find much to enjoy
at the International Plowing Match in
Ottawa -Carleton in September or at
Prince Edward Island in August or at the
World Plowing Match at Olds, Alberta in
986. See you there! L
