Present briefs to county councils The April meeting of the Bruce County Federation of Agriculture was held at the OMAF boardroom the evening of April 25. Twenty-five directors were in atten- dance. Briefs are to be prepared and presented to the councils of Bruce, Saugeen and Kincardine reaffirming the importance of the BCFA and the importance of the township levies to the BCFA. Elderslie township has asked for help and support from BCFA to bring about changes in the fuel tax charges for vehicles used on the farm. It was moved by Ron Garland, seconded by Elmer Ceaser that a resolution be drafted and presented to OFA on this matter. Merle Gunby, OFA executive, was present to give us some facts and figures regarding the proposed tax rebate program. OFA will be putting out more information in the Member's Digest in the near future. A motion by Brian Ireland seconded by Ted Fischer that BCFA support OFA's position on the tax bill carried by a large majority. Our fieldman Doug Gowanlock, in- formed the board that BCFA membership now stands at 1282. Glen Sawyer of our hydro committee reported on recent meetings he has attended. He reported that agriculture and forest resources are ranked near the top as to importance when routing the new power lines from BNPD. Our financial advisory committee is now in place and actively working on some cases. Committee members are Jim Powers, Len Calhoun, Cameron MacAuley, Carl Spender and Harold Poechman. Wayne Roberton, Bruce -North regional director brought to our attention a letter he had received stating that the Federal Government feels that foreign ownership is not a major problem and that there were only 7000 acres of foreign owned land in Bruce County: Wayne's research has located 5000 acres in Bruce township plus another 3000 in Huron Township. This goes to show how up-to-date and concerned governments are on this problem. On June 2, BCFA will be holding a "Meet the Bankers" meeting in lieu of our regular meeting. We would like to have some hard facts on questionable bank practices to present to senior bank officials at that meeting. It was suggest- ed we invite Ralph Barrie or Harry Zwerver to this meeting. Plans are in progress for the semi-annual meeting which will be a banquet and dance. Next meeting. June 2nd. Time and place will be mailed out to directors.
