Highlights from Grey Federation meetings In response to OFA's request for more input from the counties re the Proposed Property Taxation, Grey Federation of agriculture is holding a meeting on May 30 at Beavercrest School, Markdale at 8:30 p.m. All ISM's in Grey County are urged to attend; your opinion and your vote will determine Grey Federation of Agriculture's position. Speakers will be present from Ontario Federation of Agri- culture Tax and Assessment Committee, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture & Food, Provincial Government and Grey Federa- tion of Agriculture. Les Frayne, agrologist with the Bank of Montreal and Roly Thomas, Royal Bank, were present at the April meeting of Grey Federation of Agriculture. Mr. Frayne discussed fixed interest lending. Cost for fixed interest loans is l/2% over floating at that time. Minimum amount is $10.00 at any one time. He stated that this program should have been intro- duced a year ealier. Re Bill C653, Mr. Frayne said the only benefit of having an arbitrator is starting communications again between farmer and banker. Roly Thomas, Royal Bank, spoke of the Royal Banks program of leasing back farms. It may help some farmers but few will be in a position to buy back the farm. The plan would protect equity. Bill C653 would allow government interference between banker and farmer. Rep. from OMAF was present to explain the Soil Conserva- tion Environment Protection Program which provides grants for erosion control and manure storage. Information is available at the OMAF office. The site committee of the Grey County Plowing Match are busy checking out several sites. Volunteers are needed for various committees. The Grant Sweiger Award plaque is hanging in the OMAF board room with the names of this year's winners inscribed. Doug Gowanlock stated that the membership is up this past quarter to 1048. We qualified for the OFA rebate which should help our finances. Small claims court information is now available at the office in Hanover for anyone wanting to know procedures or costs. Clay Schwegler and I attended the Public Relations Seminar in Toronto. Agri Food week was discussed. Some counties had mall displays, some had host farms and displays at fall fairs. Roy Maxwell of CBC Radio Noon was guest speaker with tips on putting out interest- ing news releases. Mitchell Lundy, chairman of Grey Federation of Agriculture Insurance com- mittee and Mrs. Lundy along with my husband and I attended the Co-operators policy holders dinner at Listowel. Murray Clarke represented Grey Fed- eration of Agriculture at the Ministry of Energy luncheon at Underwood. Ontario Hydro recently signed an agreement to facilitate transfer of assets of the Bruce Energy Centre from the Bruce Energy Centre Development Corporation to the Ontario energy Corporation. The lun- cheon was to recognize this important event. Ray Robertson, Grant Preston and I met with the OFA Tax and Assessment Committee in Toronto to discuss our tax programs. Ralph Barrie OFA president is meeting with the committee this week. The next meeting of Grey Federation is May 25, 8 p.m. at the OMAF board room Markdale. Bessie Saunders
