Property Land Taxes:
After a lengthy discussion on the
"proposed tax law" the three following
resolutions were presented:
1. John VanBeers moved that Huron
County Federation of Agriculture offi-
cially support the OFA position on the
tax proposal, seconded by Doug Gar-
niss. Defeated, 57-22
2. Moved by Clete Dalton, seconded by
Murray Howatt that Huron County Fed-
eration of Agriculture oppose the new
tax laws... amendment by George Un-
derwood, seconded by John VanBeers
to change the word 'new' to 'proposed'
.. resolution Carried as amended,
48-18
3. "Whereas there is a need for tax
reform in order to make payment for
education, police, fire protection and
other "people" services more equitable,
Whereas farmers in Huron County pre-
fer to remain responsible for services to
their farmland and do not wish to be
beholden to the provincial government
for land taxes,
Whereas, the Provincial Treasurer Frank
Miller has already included in his
budget an extra $20 million for farm
taxes,
Whereas farmers are concerned about
possible excess political pressures in
the future
Therefore, Huron County Federation of
Agriculture set up a Task Force to
develop an alternative to the present
50% rebate and avoid the proposed
plan to rebate 100% of tax on farm land
and buildings".
Motion by Bev Brown, seconded by
Merle Gunby, Carried.
