First Line Seeds officially open
A new seed company, operated by a
number of leading seed growers from
across Western Ontario, has officially
opened its doors.
First Line Seeds is headed by former
Ontario Federation of Agriculture presi-
dent Peter Hannam and is located just
east of Guelph on Highway #7.
The seeds are tested extensively
before being marketed. The quality
control procedure is designed to help
each member to process his seeds to
get maximum vigour into every seed lot.
Seed is tested under stress condi-
tions in order to rate its performance.
Initially it is placed in a cold chamber
which regulated temperatures between
45° - 50°F. Seed is then put into a
computer controlled growth chamber
which monitors temperature, light con-
ditions and relative humidity. All seed

is tested for vigour by an automatic
seed analyser in the quality control lab.
Other equipment in the lab includes a
fume hood which allows researchers to
treat seed with fungicides and measure
the effect it has on seed performance
and an electronic seed counter which is
used to indicate the size of the seed in
each lot. A research shed houses all the
necessary equipment for work with
plots and samples. In all crops, the
development of new varieties is sup-
ported by replicated field plot research
conducted by First Line Seeds.
First Line Seeds uses the videotex
information service Universitel for up-
to-the-minute market information. It
also provides a means of contact
between members and a method for
up-to-date information on seed inven-
tories.
With the high quality control stan-
dards demanded by First Line Seeds,
this company should be rated success -
plus.
