in phosphates is best for young plants. Royal Purple has been a good brand for her plants, but if you are looking for another brand, keep the ratio 15-30-15 in mind, she says. Getting your plants to the sunniest window is top priority, but McKee cautions too much hot and intensive sunlight can damage young plants. She suggests a piece of tissue paper over the window to give the plants some shelter and still get benefit from the Tight. The ideal location would be a sunny porch that is relatively cool. The cooler the temperatures, the hardier and tougher the plants and they will have a better chance of withstand- ing the move outdoors to the garden about the first part of May. Cold frames provide a shelter and help the young plants get adjusted to being outdoors. If you don't have a cold frame, she says you could use a blanket to cover the plants at night and slats over the area to protect them from too much sunlight. She also suggests tacking heat cab- les to the sides of the cold frame rather than putting them in the bottom. McKee spends hours working with her plants. Her specialty is rare gera- niums and she has twenty varieties ranging from varigated and multicol- oured foliage to scented and pansy geraniums. If you want to get a few select ones for your garden or window sill, come early for a good selection. One more suggestion before getting geared up for a profitable summer in your garden. If you are considering saving seeds for next years crop, be careful not to buy hybrid seeds. McKee says, while hybrids produce some mag- nificent stock, the seeds from these fruits do not breed true and the seeds saved may only produce some straggly plants that don't bear fruit. In August, The Rural Voice will feature some tips on how to save and store seeds for the next years garden.[ I FL©LVEri & VEUE GEED FfICZi 4 ,? , .
