BRUCE ANNUAL
The 41st annual meeting and banquet for the Bruce County
Federation of agriculture was held in the Ripley Community
Centre on Saturday, December 11. President Harold Poechman
chaired the meeting. In his president's remarks, Harold
reflected on his past year as president of the BCFA. He talked
on the highlights and concerns of Bruce County farmers, the
farm survival groups and the concerned farm women. Harold
also reminded us of the passing of R.J. Cobean, Ken Kelly's
unfortunate accident and house fires of Ivan Mitches and Evan
Keith.
Harold Poachman was acclaimed president for the coming
year; 1st vice president John MacAuley and 2nd vice president
Wayne Robertson were also acclaimed for a second year in
their respective positions.
John MacAuley spoke briefly on the preservation of the
family farm. Wayne Robertson spoke and called for more ISM
support.
Guest speaker for the evening was Robert Trotter from
Elmira, a columnist who writes the column One Foot In The
Furrow. Mr. Trotter had many amusing stories and many
surprising statistics. His talk was very entertaining and
thought-provoking. Mr. Trotter stressed that farmers have to
do their public relations and let people know what they are
doing.
Past president Borden Fenton was chosen as farmer of the
year for Bruce County. The award was presented by Gisele
and Brian Ireland and is donated annually by the Irelands.
