The Rural Voice, 1983-02, Page 25parts don't come in and the machine
isn't back in time?
And farmers are well aware of the
"parts" problems. Out of stock or
back -ordered --- a delay in getting parts
can be very costly during the busy
season. It is a good idea to find out in
the winter time if your machinery needs
parts, when a delay in delivery will not
be too serious.
A good preventative maintenance pro-
gram should minimize the danger of
having your machinery tied up at the
repair shop during the busy season.
Manufacturing plants usually schedule
clean-up and repair work during their
off season when their employees might
otherwise risk being laid off. An extra
reward would be the peace of mind you
would have, knowing that all of your
machinery is in top working order and
ready to go.
One farmer says that washing a piece
of machinery with high pressure steam
is one of the best methods of preventa-
tive maintenance. Then you can see
where any oil is leaking or parts are
worn. Also, this saves the mechanic
time, which is money saved, when he is
working on a machine. This farmer
regularly takes his combine into his
machinery dealer at the end of the
season and has it thoroughly cleaned.
"The cost is minimal," he says, "and
it's the best money we spend." One
equipment dealer said that they always
steam clean the equipment before work-
ing on it. if it hasn't already been done
by the farmer. And this cleaning is
added onto the bill.
Also, would it save time at the repair
shop if you removed the front end
loader before sending your tractor in for
repairs?
Another consideration is your own
personal safety and that of anyone else
operating your machinery. Taking the
time now to make sure all the shields
and floor mats are properly in place,
and lights in working order seems like a
good idea. And don't forget your SMV
signs, all freshly painted and wired
onto the back of each machine. (This
could save you trying to persuade the
OPP that your sign must have just
fallen off since you left the farm.)
Have you ever asked yourself if the
time you spend doing your own repairs
could be better spent in another area of
your business, such as catching up on
your accounting and production records
or analyzing your financial statements?
Successful farming depends on the
wise management of your time as well
as your finances, productivity and other
resources.
So take advantage of the relative
quiet of the winter months to give your
valuable machinery the kind of treat-
ment it deserves.
